Given Australia’s close connection with the United States of America, and that the voting for 45th President of the United States will take place on November 11th there will be a lot of interest in this film for Australian audiences.
The name of the film is taken from Trump’s TV reality show which ran from 2004 to 2017. It was one of the most-watched programs on NBC.
Directed by Ali Abbasi it is the first high profile film made about Donald Trump.
The 1970s and 80s were the early days when Trump (played convincingly by Sebastian Stan) built his real-estate business in New York City – exemplified in the building of the luxury hotel Trump Towers.
The film focuses on his close relationship with Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong. Succession), an influential lawyer and prosecutor who was the former chief council to Senator Mc Carthy during the communist witch hunts, and who played a prominent role in the Rosenberg’s conviction. His mantra was “attack attack attack” and “admit nothing, deny everything”.
The film includes scenes of sex, rape, amphetamine use, liposuction and plastic surgery which are not easy to watch.
Writer Gabrial Sherman (who was the author of a best-selling biography of Fox News founder Roger Ailes) said “It’s important to note that it is not a documentary. It’s a work of fiction that’s inspired by history”.
Big-time supporter close friend and billionaire Dan Snyder donated a large sum of money to the production of the film under the impression that it would be a positive portrayal of Trump, but after seeing it both he and Trump attempted to stop its release to the public.
